What is TMJ?
TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint. It is the joint that connects the lower jawbone to the skull. The TMJ cannot be described as a simple hinge. The jaw itself is in an area of the body that is crowded with complex muscle and nerve networks. In addition to the joint having complex surroundings, the necessary actions and alignment of the jaw require their own complex network of nerves and muscles for proper control.
Since the TMJ is so complex, it is sensitive to, and can become irritated or misaligned due to a myriad of variables. When irritation develops in the TMJ, it typically signals a problem though pain and headaches, as well as popping, clicking and grinding sounds.
